Restoring Dignity, Protecting Futures: How Menstrual Hygiene & Biblical Identity Keep Ugandan Girls in School

How Menstrual Hygiene Management & Biblical Identity Keep Girls in School

Across rural Uganda, puberty starts an academic crisis most people never see. A milestone that should be a celebration instead brings isolation, shame, and missed school days for adolescent girls.

The Silent Driver of Classroom Absenteeism

Studies in the Pan African Medical Journal and assessments from UNICEF Uganda show schoolgirls miss up to 11% of academic days each month because of menstruation. In poor rural areas, more than 60% of girls report missing school for three reasons:

  • Cost: Girls who can’t afford sanitary pads turn to rags, dried banana leaves, or sponge foam.
  • Facilities: Rural schools often lack private WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) facilities with running water and a door that locks.
  • Stigma: Fear of staining and teasing from classmates wears down a girl’s confidence and self-worth.

Missing 3 to 5 school days a month adds up to real learning loss. Falling grades and stigma push about 28% of rural girls to drop out of primary or secondary school, and once they’re out, forced marriage, teen pregnancy, and long-term poverty follow.

NextSteps Ministries’ Response: Body, Mind, and Spirit

At NextSteps Ministries Uganda, no girl should have to choose between her dignity and her education. Our Girls’ Health, Dignity, and Menstrual Hygiene Program responds on four fronts:

  • MHM Workshops: Age-appropriate, medically accurate sessions in partner schools and churches cover reproductive anatomy, cycle tracking, and hygiene.
  • Dignity Kits: Every girl in the program gets a termly hygiene pack: underwear, antibacterial soap, a hygiene guide, and sanitary pads.
  • Mentorship Circles: Small groups led by Christian women mentors, teachers, and church leaders give girls a safe place to ask about puberty, relationships, and their emotional wellbeing.
  • Biblical Identity: We teach girls that their bodies are intentional and “fearfully and wonderfully” made by God (Psalm 139:14), pushing back against the cultural taboos that shame them.

A Solution That Pays for Itself: Youth Tailoring Micro-Enterprises

Imported disposable pads are expensive, and relying on them keeps a program dependent on outside money indefinitely. NextSteps Ministries solves this by connecting girls’ health to its Youth Vocational Tailoring Micro-Enterprises.

Young women in our vocational workshops learn to make washable, medical-grade reusable sanitary pads. That does two things at once: it gives out-of-school young women real, sustainable work, and it puts affordable, locally made hygiene kits in the hands of schoolgirls across Jinja and the islands.

CORE IMPACT TAKEAWAY: Measurable Transformation in Dignity
Sanitary pads alone don’t keep a girl in school. Pair them with a sense of worth rooted in Scripture and a local supply chain that never runs dry, and period-related dropout rates fall to nearly zero across NSM’s sponsored school cohorts.
